The resin bed is what actually softens water — cation exchange resin swaps hardness ions for sodium, then recharges with brine. We stock standard and high-crosslink cation softening resin from Hydronix, PureT, Watts and more, in pound bags and full cubic-foot quantities to rebed any softener.
How to choose softening resin
Crosslink = life. 8% crosslink resin is the standard value choice; 10% resin resists chlorine and lasts longer on municipal water.
Match volume to the tank. Softeners use ~1 CF (about 30 lb) per cubic foot of capacity — a 9x48 tank is typically 1 CF, 10x54 ~1.5 CF.
Rebed a tired softener. If a softener regenerates but won't soften, fouled or broken-down resin is usually the cause — rebedding restores it.
Protect with carbon. Chlorine slowly degrades resin; carbon pre-filtration extends resin life on city water.
