UV Water Purification — Destroy Pathogens Without Chemicals
Ultraviolet disinfection is the only water treatment technology that neutralizes bacteria, viruses, and cysts instantly — with no chemicals, no byproducts, and no change to taste, odor, or pH. One pass through a UV reactor and microorganisms are permanently inactivated.
Unlike chlorine or other chemical disinfectants, UV purification leaves zero chemical residue in your water and creates no disinfection byproducts. It's the final defense against biological contamination — ideal as a last stage after carbon filtration, or as stand-alone protection for well water, RO systems, and sensitive applications including food service, lab, medical, and pharmaceutical use.

The Science
How UV Disinfection Works
Water Enters Pre-Filtered
UV is most effective on clear, clean water. Pre-treat with a sediment filter (5 micron recommended) and carbon filter to remove particulates, turbidity, and chlorine. Suspended particles can shield microorganisms from UV exposure.
254 nm UV-C Light Penetrates Cell DNA
Water flows through the stainless steel reactor chamber surrounding the UV lamp. The 254 nanometer UV-C wavelength penetrates the cell walls of bacteria, viruses, and cysts and is absorbed directly by their DNA and RNA — disrupting the genetic material that allows them to replicate.
Microorganisms Permanently Inactivated
Within seconds of UV exposure, pathogens are rendered unable to reproduce or cause infection — even though they remain in the water. This is the critical distinction: UV does not remove microorganisms, it inactivates them. They cannot cause harm.
Disinfected Water — No Residual, No Byproducts
The treated water exits the chamber with no chemical additions, no change in taste, pH, or odor, and no disinfection byproducts. UV is the only disinfection method with zero chemical impact on the water itself.
UV dose matters: Effective UV disinfection requires a minimum dose of 30 mJ/cm² — all Polaris Scientific models are rated at exactly this standard. Flow rate must not exceed the system's rated GPM, as higher flow reduces contact time and UV dose delivered to the water.
What UV Eliminates
Pathogens Inactivated by UV-C Light
Bacteria
E. coli, Coliform, Salmonella, Legionella, Staphylococcus, and virtually all other waterborne bacteria are inactivated at standard UV doses.
Viruses
Hepatitis A, Rotavirus, Adenovirus, Norovirus, and other waterborne viruses. UV is effective against viruses that chlorine cannot reliably address.
Cysts
Cryptosporidium and Giardia — chlorine-resistant parasites that cause serious gastrointestinal illness — are effectively inactivated by UV-C exposure.
Protozoa & Algae
Waterborne protozoa and algae organisms are highly susceptible to UV disruption, making UV ideal for well water, surface water, and RO post-treatment.
UV does not remove dissolved contaminants. UV disinfection targets biological organisms only — it does not remove chlorine, heavy metals, nitrates, VOCs, or TDS. For comprehensive water treatment, combine UV with a carbon pre-filter (for chemicals) and sediment pre-filter (for particulates). An RO system upstream provides the most complete pre-treatment before UV polishing.
Pre-Treatment Requirements
Water Quality Limits for UV Effectiveness
UV transmission — the ability of UV light to pass through water — is affected by dissolved substances. Water exceeding these levels should be pre-treated before reaching the UV system to ensure full disinfection effectiveness.
⚠ Iron (Fe)
Iron absorbs UV light and shields microorganisms. Install iron filtration or a water softener upstream if levels exceed this limit.
⚠ Hardness
Hard water causes scale buildup on the quartz sleeve, reducing UV output over time. Soften or use scale inhibition upstream.
⚠ Manganese (Mn)
Manganese stains the quartz sleeve and reduces UV transmission. Pre-treat with appropriate iron/manganese filtration.
⚠ Turbidity
Suspended particles physically block UV light from reaching microorganisms. A 5 micron sediment pre-filter is essential.
⚠ Tannins (Color)
Tannins and natural color absorb UV light. Carbon filtration upstream typically addresses both color and chlorine together.
✓ pH
UV is effective across the full range of normal drinking water pH. No pH adjustment is required for UV disinfection.
Always install a 5 micron sediment filter upstream of any UV system. This is the single most important pre-treatment step — it removes the suspended particles that would otherwise shadow microorganisms from UV exposure. Pair with a carbon block to remove chlorine, which can degrade the quartz sleeve and ballast components over time.
Maintenance
Keeping Your UV System at Full Output
Replace UV Lamp Annually
Replace every 12 months regardless of whether the lamp still glows. UV output diminishes before the lamp fails — the lamp may still light up while no longer delivering sufficient disinfection dose.
Inspect Quartz Sleeve
Clean the quartz sleeve when replacing the lamp. Scale and mineral deposits on the sleeve reduce UV transmission. Replace the sleeve if it becomes etched, cloudy, or cracked — a degraded sleeve can reduce disinfection effectiveness by 30–50%.
Respond to Alarms Promptly
HO and B-Series units include audible alarms for lamp failure. Do not use the water for drinking or cooking while the alarm is active — replace the lamp immediately.
Check Upstream Pre-Filters
The UV system's effectiveness depends on clean incoming water. Replace sediment and carbon pre-filters on schedule — a clogged or exhausted pre-filter reduces UV transmission and can cause premature sleeve fouling.
Replacement lamps, quartz sleeves, and ballasts for all Polaris Scientific models are available separately. Have your model number ready — each series uses a different lamp (GL10PP through GL87PP for standard series, GLHO series for HO models). Call us at (877) 541-6603 or email support@isopurewater.com and we'll match the right part to your unit.
Zero Chemicals
No chlorine, no bromine, no ozone. UV adds nothing to your water — and removes only the biological threat.
Instant Action
Microorganisms are inactivated within seconds of UV exposure. No contact time, no retention tank, no waiting.
No Taste Change
UV imparts zero change in taste, odor, pH, or conductivity. Water is biologically safe and chemically unchanged.
Scales to Any Flow
From 1 GPM RO post-treatment to 200 GPM industrial loops — the Polaris line covers every application in a single product family.
