A great all-around general filter media to have is carbon. A Residential Carbon Filter removes Chlorine, bad taste & odor and many unwanted organic contaminants and chemicals in the water. Chlorine is a chemical used in many household cleaning products. It is used as a disinfectant in water and made to be consumed. Because of the toxicity of Chlorine, cities regulate how much of it can be placed in the tap water lines in order for it to be considered safe to use and consume. Chlorine is considered dangerous to our bodies because it produces acides that are corrosive which damage cells upon contact. On average, the body absorbs 50% of Chlorine through the skin from the vapors in the air during a hot shower. Having a carbon filter prevents and eliminates the worries any future health problems.
Of course, some other contaminants require further or special treatment. Iron removal can be simple or difficult depending on the type found in your water. Ferric (aka rust or red water iron) can easily be filtered out using just a simple sediment filter or backwashing sediment filter. Ferrous (aka dissolved or clear water iron) requires special treatment using either oxidation or ion exchange. Oxidation filters typically use special media to catalyze the reaction like Manganese Greensand, Birm, Filox or KDF-85 media. Ion exchange filters can also remove Iron and do not require oxygenated water to remove ferrous iron. Factors that determine the life of the filter are the pH and the amount of Hydrogen Sulfide in the water.
Whole House Filter Systems including PURA, Big Blue & Fleck Brands
PURA UV filters are also a great way to get the best of both worlds of having whole house filtration as well as disinfected treated water. With a PURA UV, you would be able to use Big Blue filter housings as well as a UV lamp all using the same system. Big Blue filter housings are perfect because they do not require any electricity or drainage lines; and you can easily use specialty cartridges to remove your specific unwanted contaminant. The start up costs to Big Blue filter housings is much less than a full sized Clack or Fleck backwashing system and replacements are can easily be done by the home or end-user.
Whole house filter system can be combined with water softeners to give your home the complete water treatment it deserves. If installed, whole house filters should be installed prior to a water softener to increase the life of the softener.
