Are Whole House Water Filtration Systems Worth It?

Value is a personal determination. What one person may deem a necessity another may not find important. However, when the discussion centers around access to clean and clear drinking water perspectives may more closely align. 

In order to determine the feasibility of purchasing and installing a whole house water filtration system and assessing the cost for it, you must first understand what these systems do.

A whole house water filtration system is designed to treat the water as it enters your home. By removing impurities at the entry point, you can rest assured that all of the water throughout your house (including water from showers, faucets, and washing machines) has been filtered.  One system takes care of the entire house. These whole house filters are referred to as POE filters - Point Of Entry. They filter  water prior to it entering your home.

Of course, there are options other than a whole house filter. For example, you may choose to purchase an under sink or counter top water filter. These, however, only filter the water from the specific source where they are installed. That said, they are less expensive.

While whole house water filtration systems are more costly than the countertop and under sink options, they do provide significant benefits. 

First, all of the water that enters your home (through all sinks, showers, and appliances) is filtered. You can be sure that the water you drink,  use to brush your teeth and shower is clean and fresh. Whole house filters remove unpleasant odors and tastes.

Additionally, whole house filters can save you money. Using filtered water extends the life of your appliances; you will have to repair and replace them less often.  And, filtered water helps prevent damage to your plumbing pipes, once again alleviating costly repairs.

The final answer is…..maybe.  Depending upon your home, your lifestyle and your wants and needs, whole house filtration systems can be incredibly valuable, saving you money and providing you confidence that all of the water in your home is clean and fresh.  That said, some homes can leverage other less expensive options to meet their needs.

When considering a whole house water filtration system, however, it is important to keep in mind that over time the savings can accumulate and outweigh the initial cost outlay.
