Water supplies from 35 major US cities were tested by The Environmental Working Group and 31 were found to have toxic levels of the carcinogen. Hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium-6, is primarily used in industrial construction and in metal plating. The use of hexavalent chromium is regulated in Europe due it's harmful affects however, California is the only state to date within the United States that regulates the use hexavalent chromium. The toxic levels found within tap water is mainly due to old pipes that were constructed before the harmful effects of hexavalent chromium were brought to the attention of general public.

Unique to this new water filtration systems is its ability to control tank levels and lower them during times when the system is not in use such as over the holiday break season. This ability will not only lower costs for the university but will also increase its operating ability and cut down on chemical costs and replacement filters.

Safe and clean water within the area isn?t a luxury or viewed as a top priority. Local residents in the surrounding villages do not recognize the need for clean and sanitary practices which is not only negatively affecting their health but also their water sources. Residents use the beaches and the outdoors as their toilet which is contributing to their lack of available clean and safe water. Parker, who is also teaming up with SurfAid International and Glacier Water, is taking the ?teach a man how to fish approach? to Walu International.

A failed attempt to replace old lead pipes and bring lead free water to over 15,000 homes in the Washington, D.C. area has left the city scrambling for their water filters as The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority have reported the water running through these old pipes are contaminated with dangerous levels of lead.
