Each medium has it's own purpose. It's important to know which media works best for each situation and also the contact time required for each media. Sediment filtration media include Alamo's Micro-Z which works best for filtration down to about 5-10 micron and can remove some particulate rust. Iron removal is a little more tricky and requires oxidation using Birm or Filox and even Greensand Plus. Each media has it's pros and cons and it's important to know your water's condition before creating a new system.
